December Parent Council Meeting Minutes: December 11, 2013

Present: Jan, Nana, Sen, Nancy S., Nancy M., Ron, Mark, Cathy M., Sandy, Bobbie, Cathy Saytar

Regrets: Cindy, Leslie, Adam Bernstein

• Financial report: $360 for the lunch,  building fund has not been cashed (check with Dr. Bernstein) Balance $8694.31; need to buy the BBQ (check with Adam); every month $7.00 service charge from bank; discussion focused around future purchases –survey teachers re: wish lists
• Sandy Zidner called meeting to order at 7:50 p.m. and a quorum was in attendance.
• Minutes from the last meeting – October 9, 2013 were adopted and approved by all committee members. 
• Financials reviewed and approved.  Adam to advise student council to purchase one BBQ.  
• Roundtable discussion

• School is cold; Cathy to check with custodian
• Discussion focused on sub committee news.:

• Parent education event - 
• Committee reviewed their plan –
• Target: audience parents of Chisholm Academy; opportunity to network; 
• Format one evening with two speakers; 40 minutes each with 20 minute gap in between
• Topics: 
• technology, more structured presentation (Emilio); talked about 2 in the spring; 
• Nutritional support for learning; panel of dietician and a naturopath; moderator 
• Other topics: Financing your child’s education, medical tax, etc. (check with Adam what they did in the past; 
• Spring January 29 or February 5 and  February 27 Time:  7:00-9:00 p.m.
• Budget-token gift for speaker, refreshments
• Student event -DANCE Thursday, February 13, 7:30-11:00 p.m.; 
• Purpose:  Fun night for students grades 7-12; 
• DJ ($300 Cathy, Sandy and Nana), 
• parent council would subsidize and the students would pay $10.00; 
• student council and grade 12’s could advertise and sell tickets; 
• arrange for supervision; (check regarding security) intent: 40 participants; maximum of 2 tickets per person (outside friends may be invited) .
• Fundraising-- Ron arranged a donation from Terra Equity Children’s Foundation ($3000.) he will connect with Adam Bernstein regarding the process.
• Event planning--Parent event  Liked last year’s venue; Oakville Harbour Banquet Facility;  
• Dates: Friday, May 2, 2014 or April 25, 2014; Time 6:00 for 7:30 p.m. 
• $75.00 per person sold tickets; grades did gift baskets; 
• Event bright on-line booking; no early bird booking but maybe an incentive for early purchasers; 
• also have a silent auction for fundraising; 
• photo booth; Jan to check with other special vendors (ideas! i.e. lipstick reader, fortune teller, hand writing expert?)
• Communications -- Bobbie put together a blog with agenda and minutes; is open to groups opinions.
• New homework site-hopefully available in the new year.
• Update on school trips for 2014-Ottawa proceeding; Italy/Greece proceeding; meetings in the new year for students and parents for more specific details and what to expect from the trip.
• Next meeting – Jan.15, 2014.  All meetings start at 6:30 for food and 7:00 for the meeting.
